Guitarists, Unite to GET MORE GIGS!

by vaughn skow May 11, 2011 2 min read

This week I’ll talk about how to get gigs as a guitar player, but first, I’m going to do something amazing; and I’m quite sure never before done in any blog, anywhere, anytime:  Begin with a survey!  Man, what’ll I think up next??  So, take this quick survey, and then READ ON!

My band playing at a local car show "cruise-in", just 3 miles from home, dude!

You took the survey, right? Okay, so what’s the point?  The point is that, as a big musical family, we need to all help each other to find musical nirvana - that goldilocks spot that is just right for who we are, and the point in life we are at.  As a very young man, I played my hinny off in little dive bars till 1:00 in the morning or later; and it was great for a while.  Then I moved to Nashville and started going out on the big busses and flying all over the world doing big gigs; and it was great for a while.  Then I got married and had a daughter; it was time to finally be an adult.  Today, I work in studios, have a hobby band that plays small gigs, and play a lot in church.  Turns out, that’s a healthy combination for where I’m at in life right now.  Go figure!

My point is this: today I have more fun playing on the back of my little trailer at local car show cruise-ins (see pic above) than I would if I were still riding the big busses and spending lots of time away from home. Oh, and another point to ponder: if you ain’t playing in any church at any level ... you should consider it!  Even if you ain’t particularly religious, there’s a church gig for everyone.  One church I used to play at a lot had the band play pop hits, stuff like Avril Lavigne, Green Day, Stones, etc.  Cool, huh?

Okay, so I’m shutting up for now, next week I’ll discuss the results and, together, we’ll all help each other find that nice comfortable spot where our playing fit’s just perfectly into our lives; so BE SURE TO TAKE THE SURVEY!  Oh, and also ... be sure to post any comments here that you think will help other guitarists find work!!
