I am building a 2X12 speaker cab out of pine. The box is 30 X 16 X 14.5, and is closed back. I would like a very versitile speaker set up, and was thinking of a pair of reaper 50 watt speakers based on the audio clips here. I play mostly rock, not metal, but pretty heavy. I also play lots of clean stuff, and would like a nice rich clean sound too. My amp is a 25 watt Fender Super Champ XD (I converted it to a head by building it it's own box). I would very much appreciate any help, and am very open to the idea of mixing an matching as well as a set pair. I do not know if it will make a sonic difference, but the box is constructed using dovetail joints, and I made it to be very strong with good bracing inside. Just for kicks, I stained it emerald green (it looks cool!)
Thanks In advance... Andrew
Check out my blog on mixing 12's in a 2-12 cab. The cab I used is almost exactly the same dimensions as yours, but ported (I tried it closed, it sounded better with the ports open). We were totally diggin' on the Reaper/ET65 combo!
So I checked out the blog, and you are so right, the ET65 with a reaper is killin' it, but please allow me to ask you another question. Will the 50 watt version of the reaper sound a lot different from the standard 30 watt version. I like the sound of that combo of speakers, but I worry about the power if I use a high powered head with the cab. I wonder if the 50 watt will have to much low end in it, and with the ET65 will it have to much low end in it to remain clear as a combination. If you think the combo can handle a 50 - 100 watt head as a standard reaper, then I'm going with it because it sounded awesome, but if the 50 watt is what will fit best, I'll go with that. Again, you help is greatly appreciated.
Andrew
The Reaper HP is not too tonally different from the Reaper HP. If you are going to use the cab with a 100-watt tube head, I would suggest the ET65/Reaper HP combo. With a 50-watt head (or less), go with the standard Reaper - it is just a touch more nimble and responsive at lower power.
Thanks for the help Vaughn. I think to fit my needs for power I will go with the Reaper HP and an ET65. Thanks again!
